Glamox, a global leader in lighting, has introduced reinforced versions of some of its best-selling ceiling lights, featuring a frame and diffuser capable of withstanding severe impacts. The Glamox Anti-Ligature Frame was specifically designed for a Swedish prison, where it is currently being installed. It aims to prevent the ceiling light from causing harm or self-harm. This is the latest addition to Glamox’s Defence & Security portfolio, which includes searchlights, floodlights, explosion-proof luminaires, military-grade lighting, and cyber-secure smart lighting systems.

The specially designed steel frame and toughened polycarbonate diffuser work with the Glamox C95-R, C92-R, C90-R, C77-R, C25-R and M2-R ceiling LED luminaires, and are available in the popular 600 x 600mm size. The product is aimed at prisons, police stations, psychiatric facilities, and other environments that demand ruggedised lighting. It is also suitable for some defence establishments, such as offices and stores.

The Anti-Ligature Frame has an IK11 rating. This represents the highest impact resistance level for electrical enclosures according to the IEC 62262:2021 standard, meaning it can withstand 50 joules of impact energy, equivalent to dropping a 10kg object from a height of 50cm.

“We have essentially taken some of our most popular ceiling lights and created an extra-durable version of them. We went beyond the IK11 tests and subjected the luminaire to extreme abuse. We dropped a 10kg weight from a height of 160cm on its corners. That’s a force of 160 joules. The screen was not damaged in any way, nor were the frame or screws,” said Tord Christensen, who heads up the Defence & Security business for Glamox’s Professional Building Solutions division.

“We have already installed a high number of luminaires with the frame in a prison in Sweden. This is a tough environment where a standard luminaire could be damaged, posing a safety risk to inmates and staff. The prison wanted a light that would last and avoid unnecessary maintenance and replacement costs,” added Christensen.

The product was developed at Glamox’s production facility in Keila, Estonia, and tested at its luminaire testing facility in Molde, Norway.
