EV charging network provider Gridserve and electric haulage firm Voltloader have announced a new charging partnership which will see Gridserve’s growing Electric Freightway added to Voltloader’s existing depot-based eHGV charger network.

The new agreement will see Voltloader expand its charging network with Gridserve’s custom-designed ultra-rapid eHGV charging infrastructure. From an operational perspective, the deal will also give Voltloader preferential charging rates, while Gridserve will be able to glean insight into how public eHGV charging can support the day-to-day requirements of commercial freight operators.

The Electric Freightway was originally part of the Zero Emission HGV and Infrastructure Demonstrator (ZEHID) programme, as part of Innovate UK. The programme, led by Gridserve, brought together more than 30 industry partners, including Voltloader, to accelerate the development of charging infrastructure for electric HGVs.

The programme saw the UK’s first public eHGV charging hubs designed and delivered. Data gathered from participants found that a single electric HGV could cut approximately 1,000 tonnes of carbon emissions by 2034, compared with a diesel equivalent.

Gridserve says six further eHGV charging hubs will open by the first quarter of 2027, following record results for the first half of 2026. With zero-emission trucks accounting for only 1.4% of the overall HGV market in 2025, the companies believe that these partnerships will aim to build confidence in the transition to electrification, as Voltloader CEO Dave Rose put it.
