ContourGlobal Enters UK Market With 2GWh BESS Acquisition

Executive Summary

  • ContourGlobal has entered the UK market by acquiring Wallace, a 500 MW / 2,000 MWh grid-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) in Ayr, Scotland
  • The site is ‘ideally positioned to support grid balancing and the integration of the region’s substantial surplus wind generation’, the company noted
  • The acquisition of the site, one of the largest BESS developments in the UK, involved several sellers, including New Energy Partnership Limited

Power producer ContourGlobal has made a strategic entry into the UK market with the acquisition of a 500 MW / 2,000 MWh grid-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) in Scotland.

The project, known as Wallace, is located in Ayr and features four hours of storage duration, making it one of the largest BESS developments in the UK. The acquisition involved ‘several’ sellers, including UK developer New Energy Partnership Limited.

Wallace, which has Gate 2 status under the UK grid connection reform process, is expected to participate in the upcoming UK Capacity Market auction, which awards agreements for the target delivery year using a format where participants bid for the lowest price they are willing to provide capacity.

The move ‘marks a significant milestone in ContourGlobal’s European expansion’, the company noted, into markets with ‘attractive macroeconomic fundamentals, mature regulatory frameworks, and strong demand from power-intensive industries and digital infrastructure.’

“Entering the United Kingdom is a key step in our strategy to become a leading independent power producer in renewables and energy storage,” said Antonio Cammisecra, CEO of ContourGlobal. “The UK combines a world-class regulatory environment, a deep and liquid energy market, and a critical and growing need for flexible storage assets to support the integration of its wind generation capacity.”

Cammisecra added that Scotland in particular offered a ‘compelling’ opportunity. “The region produces a significant surplus of renewable energy that faces grid constraints in reaching demand centres further south, and large-scale battery storage is key to unlocking that value,” he added. “We are proud to add the UK to our growing portfolio, and we expect to significantly expand our presence with a diversified pipeline of development opportunities in renewable generation and energy storage.”

ContourGlobal added that Wallace was also ‘well positioned’ to capture value through the UK’s Balancing Mechanism. This continuously open auction is the National Energy System Operator’s (NESO) primary tool to balance supply and demand on Britain’s network. Scottish BESS projects can benefit through strong dispatch activity, ContourGlobal noted.
